The One Project is the First Year Experience (FYE) program for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Ally students at the University of Maryland. It is a comprehensive approach to ensure that LGBTQA identifying first year students make a successful transition to college. The One Project aims to retain LGBTQ students and their allies at the University of Maryland by providing intentional academic and personal growth and promoting the development of those students.
Through participation in the The One Project, the university has the following primary goals for students:
1. Become actively engaged within the LGBTQA campus community
2. Develop lasting relationships with peers, faculty and staff members
3. Develop a better understanding of self as an LGBTQA person (social, physiological, cognitive, spiritual, and cultural)
4. Demonstrate high levels of academic performance
5. Become educated on health issues surrounding the LGBTQA community
6. Will be able to identify campus and community resources available to the LGBTQA community
7. Become engaged and knowledgeable on civic engagement in the LGBTQA community
8. Become leaders for social justice and social change as outlined in the Campus Diversity Plan
The One Project starts with New Resident Orientation and continues throughout the first year of the student’s life at the University of Maryland. There is a UNIV100 section for LGBTQ identifying students and their allies. The One Project is a series of events that are educationally, socially, and personally developmental. Events may also be leadership-related and service-oriented. Most events are free to students and are open to all LGBTQ students, their allies and those wishing to learn more about the community.
