Redefining Trans

The other night we had our final discussion for the semester in the "The" series (The T in LGBTQA)...we'll finish up our series with the Q and the B next semester.

Our presenters were two trans-identifying activists from the DC Trans Coalition (www.dctranscoalition.org). I walked into the room thinking that I knew it all. I work with trans students, I read up on my trans research, I've taken LGBTQ training seminars, but there was a lot that was shared in that room that I learned and that I think a lot of people learned.

The trans community is probably one of the most misunderstood community out of all of our letters. Trans people are not just "in the wrong body," they are just us. We are all trans because what is normal? And even if we don't identify as trans, the general definition qualifies a lot of us as such. What I mean is that our presenter really gave us a paradigm shifting perspective. She said that in a way we are all trans because we all want to change our selves or our body in some way. We all want to be something that is different from what we are now whether it be our weight, hair color or length, our nose, our chin or style. I'm sure that is simplifying the challenge that a trans person may experience since a trans person will deal with this change at a much more intense level; however, the basic idea remains.

Another eye-opening moment at a One Project Event!!

Talking about Is God Gay on December 3. Be there!
