Yesterday, we had our first The One Project Event. It was the Kick-Off event for the first year of our program. To be honest, we were all a bit nervous that nobody would show up. Luckily, that wasn't the case. As 1:30 rolled around, more and more students showed up and we definitely deemed this welcome a success. We had about 30 students come to the event, but we know that there are even more LGBTQA students out there because they have registered for our UNIV100 course or shown interest in the course. This is really good news and we hope that we can continue this energy through the year.
The best part of the event was watching all of the students mingle with each other before and after the event. We know that students who feel committed to the university (through academic and social connections) are more likely to persist in college and graduate on time and these initial connections are what we hope will carry our LGBT students through!
